With the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) having come into effect, many countries around the world have changed their strategies for the supply and demand of energy from ones that were heavily dependent on fossil fuels, and begun considering, as alternatives, nuclear power and hydro power, which do not generate CO2. Some developing nations lacking technology and capital are planning to satisfy their recent surges in electricity demand through hydro power generation using their abundant water resources, and intend to export the surplus to neighboring countries.
The hydro power is a clean energy that causes almost zero emissions of CO2, the main culprit responsible for global warming, and is expected to become a promising business that will create added value as the emissions trading market becomes more active. It is anticipated that the hydro power market will continuously grow, as various countries around the world adopt low-carbon green growth strategies.
KHNP has launched its first oversea power plant construction of the Nepalese Chamelia hydro power plant in May 2009. It is showing satisfactory progress to meet the expectation to complete its construction in December 2012. Moreover, KHNP has actively pushed ahead with overseas hydro power projects in countries with abundant water resources, including South American countries like Peru and the region of North America and Canada and is drawing particular attention to other regions like South East Asian Countries for hydro power plant construction in Rahughat in Nepal (30MW) and Pursat in Cambodia,
