KHNP exceeds goal for producing new nuclear power technical experts
641 graduates of this year will contribute to the revitalization of the local economy
- 520 out of the 641 graduates have already been hired by companies, including nuclear power plant (NPP) partners
On December 10, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP, President & CEO Jong-shin Kim) announced that it had exceeded its goal of creating jobs for local residents by producing a total of 641 nuclear power technicians, including 314 NPP construction technicians and 327 NPP operation technicians, through the nuclear power plant construction training center this year.
In fact, 520 technicians, which is 80% of the total graduating class, have already been hired by partners, including Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Daewoo Engineering & Construction, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, KPS, and Samchang Enterprise. Accordingly, KHNP decided to expand the current 'NPP construction training center' into a NPP technical experts training center in order to supply technicians to nuclear power plant project locations at home and abroad, as well as to utilize the workforce for other industrial areas.
KHNP announced that it held a graduation ceremony on December 10th for this year's final 31 graduates from Nuclear Power Education Institute in Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan-si, to celebrate the 'completion of the training of nuclear power plant technicians in 2009.' The 31 graduates presented with certificates on this day had studied piping and duct and iron beam.
By producing 641 graduates, KHNP dramatically exceeded its goal of training 500 technicians this year. In previous years, the number was typically between 80 and 100. KHNP's local resident training program was prepared in an effort to improve the social acceptability of nuclear power plant construction and to revitalize the local economy through the creation of new jobs and the expansion of youth employment opportunities.
Many consider this program to have laid the foundation for a win-win arrangement between the company and local residents, by training local residents living near nuclear power plants as nuclear power technicians, and recommending them to related companies.
President & CEO Jong-shin Kim said, "KHNP's effort to establish its local community management and to revitalize the local and national economy enabled the successful completion of the nuclear power plant technician training program. This has laid the foundation for a win-win arrangement between local residents and the company."
On this day, representatives of local authorities, local residents, and representatives of nuclear power plant contractors and maintenance companies attended the ceremony, congratulating the graduates and hoping for the continuous operation of the technical experts training program.
