World¡¯s Largest Tidal Plant Project to Commence at Incheon Bay
- KHNP and GS E&C sign MOU amounting to 3.9 trillion won
- Will build the world¡¯s largest 1.32 million kW tidal plant, which will have a scale similar to the APR1400, the exported nuclear power plant
The world¡¯s largest tidal plant will be opened at Incheon Bay in 2017.
On January 20th, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP, President & CEO Jong-shin Kim) and GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C) signed an MOU for the joint execution of the Incheon Bay tidal plant project at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel, Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
With a total investment of 3.9 trillion won, the Incheon Bay tidal plant project will commence in the second half of next year, and is expected to be completed in June 2017. The 2.41 billion kWh of electricity per annum that the plant will generate will be able to replace 3.54 million barrels of imported oil, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.01 million tons per year, and power 60% of the households in Incheon.
The facility will be constructed in an area of water spanning 157.45§´, surrounded by the southern part of Ganghwa-do (Incheon) and Jangbong-do, Yongyu-do, Sammok-do, and Yeongjong-do, (Ongjin-gun, Incheon).
Following the study result of the 5-year ¡®technology development for the commercialization of maritime energy¡¯ that was jointly conducted by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute, KHNP, and GS E&C starting in 2006, the project will fulfill the government¡¯s green growth policies and create the world¡¯s largest eco-friendly tidal plant.
This plant has a capacity that is five times larger than the plant that is currently the world¡¯s largest, which is the Rance Tidal Plant in France (0.24 million kW), as well as Korea¡¯s Shihwaho tidal plant (0.254 million kW), which will be completed at the end of this year. It has a generation capacity that is as large as the APR1400, the exported nuclear power plant.
The Incheon Bay tidal plant will have a seawall spanning 18.3 km, and 44 30,000 kW generators will be installed. In addition, artificial wetlands and fields of reeds will be created using the soil that is dug up during the construction of the plant. The project will also be executed in an eco–friendly manner by designating bird habitats as protected areas, or creating alternative habitats.
According to a feasibility study by the Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute, the Incheon Bay tidal plant is expected to create economic production of approximately 0.38 trillion won for the surrounding area during its construction period and lead to the employment of approximately 64,000 workers, making a huge contribution to the revitalization of local economy and the restoration of business.
KHNP¡¯s president and CEO Jong-shin Kim said, ¡°We will do our best to make our company a leading environmentally friendly company for the nuclear energy business by smoothly executing the Incheon Bay tidal plant project.¡±
