Shin-Kori Unit 1 Ready to Generate Power
- Fuel has been loaded to Unit 1 for the first time, and its commercial operation will begin in late December.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP, President & CEO Jong-shin Kim) recently announced that now that Shin-Kori Nuclear Units 1 and 2 have acquired operation permission, Shin-Kori Unit 1, which was scheduled to become Korea¡¯s 21st commercially operated nuclear plant at the end of this year, has finished its fuel loading and will begin producing power in earnest after going through stage-by-stage testing and maintenance procedures for commercial operation.
Shin-Kori Units 1 and 2 reduced Core Damage Frequency (CDF), which is the barometer for the degree of safety, by approximately 9%, by reflecting KHNP¡¯s experience in constructing and operating the existing OPR1000 model, and increased safety and economic feasibility by applying several construction methods that are Korean firsts, including the composite structure method and the automated welding of the coolant pipes of a reactor vessel.
It is anticipated that once Shin-Kori Units 1 and 2 are completed and begin commercial operation, they will replace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 44 million tons of bituminous coal per year, consequently reducing foreign currency expenditures and cutting carbon dioxide emissions to approximately 1/100.
Commenting on this, a KNHP insider said, ¡°As of the end of May, about 3,500 workers per day, about 5 million construction workers and 1.5 million high-quality technical experts per year will have contributed to this project, so this has contributed to the stable growth of the national economy by creating jobs despite the poor economic situation. As about 60% of the workers are residents of the local areas around the nuclear power plants, this also contributes to the revitalization of local economies.¡±
To mark this achievement, KHNP held a ceremony to celebrate the Initial fuel loading of Shin-Kori Unit 1 at the construction site on the 1st of June. Currently, Shin-Kori Unit 1 is the first Improved Korean Standard Nuclear Plant (OPR1000+), and will be the first completed since Ulchin Units 5 and 6 (OPR1000) were completed six years ago. In the meantime, Shin-Kori Unit 2, which is being constructed at the same site, is expected to begin commercial operation at the end of December 2011.
